   The Next Stage Expansion

With the quiet support of several major funders, the Emelin Theatre today announced plans for major renovations that will more than double the size of the existing structure and expand its offerings dramatically.

The new initiative, called "The Next Stage," will be a $10 million project to incorporate the existing Emelin Theatre into a spectacular new Performing Arts Center. This Center will include a slightly expanded and renovated Emelin Theatre for stage and dance productions, a new Film Theatre to continue and expand the film programs at the Emelin, and a 60-seat "black box" Experimental Theatre for readings and small productions of new playwrights, new plays and chamber music performances. The Emelin stage will be expanded dramatically to add modern technology, allowing for performances with major set changes, larger casts, and full-scale musicals.

The Emelin Theatre, founded in 1972, is the oldest continuously operating professional theatre in Westchester County. This year the Theatre will celebrate its 35th anniversary.

Though the Emelin Theatre will be renovated, the plans call for maintaining the same sense of intimacy and community that has been one of the great draws of the Theatre. "My family has been coming to the Emelin Theatre ever since it opened,” noted Founding Board member Emily Grant. "We love what it stands for: culture, enlightenment, excitement and great entertainment for young and old. The Emelin has become a magnet for all who love the performing arts. We want to make sure it will be here for generations to come."

In addition to the performing arts theatres, the Performing Arts Center will have expanded classrooms which will allow a more diverse program of learning for both children and adults. It will also have a large area for meeting and entertaining, and a magnificent roof terrace overlooking the sound for more private, intimate gatherings.

Ruth Hendel, another Board member, summed it up this way: "Stephen and I are very involved in New York theatre and entertainment. However, we live in Westchester and feel there is a great demand for quality theatre, film, music, and study in this community. We have supported the Emelin Theatre for years, and eagerly await this new Performing Arts Center. It will enhance people’s exposure to the performing arts and that’s what we believe in."

Funds for "The Next Stage" will be raised entirely from private donors and foundations, and will not be supported by local tax dollars. The Emelin Theatre is a registered not-for-profit organization under IRS laws. All contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
